AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
<p> </p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">To provide a platform to the students to exhibit their talents and creativity.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">To raise the standards of the students and make them employable.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">To cater positive attitude among our students and give them lessons of life.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">To inculcate social awareness, leadership skills, soft skills etc among our students.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">To develop the language skills of the students to use it effectively and efficiently in every situation</span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">Sociology is the science that deals with the study of the manifestations, systems and social relations, a careful analytical and descriptive study through the pursuit of different research methods, in order to reach the rules and laws governing the conduct of these phenomena and social relations.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">The Sociology Department has 5 key Aims for students taking and completing the course:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">1. Understand and be able to apply a sociological perspective proficiently to a range of social issues, as demonstrated by:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing and giving examples of how a sociological perspective and the discipline of sociology differs from and is similar to the other social sciences.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing how a sociological perspective and the discipline of sociology contribute to the liberal arts understanding of social reality.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Applying the sociological imagination, sociological principles, and concepts to their own lives and to social problems.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">2. Demonstrate an ability to think critically, as evidenced by:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Using sociological research and analytical skills to critically evaluate claims made about social reality.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">--Showing how patterns of thought and knowledge are influenced by culture and social structure.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">3. Master fundamental sociological theory and concepts, as demonstrated by:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Defining, giving examples, and demonstrating the relevance of the following: culture, social change, socialization, stratification, social structure, institutions, and differentiations by race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Comparing and contrasting basic theoretical orientations.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Applying sociological theories and concepts to social phenomena, both locally and globally.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">4. Demonstrate a complex understanding of how difference and patterns of inequality in Indian society as well as across the globe are produced and sustained, as demonstrated by:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing the significance of empirical variation by race, class, and gender/sexuality invarious part of Indian society and international contexts.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing the role of collective action, culture, structure, and the institutionalization of culture and policies (both formal and informal) in constructing and sustaining difference and inequality.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing the intersecting nature of structures of inequality and privilege and the varied ways in which these are experienced by others and themselves.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Proficiently applying sociological concepts to analyze the great moral issues of our time including poverty, racism, sexism, homophobia, genocide, war and peace, religious tolerance and intolerance, the defense of human rights, and the environmental impact of human activity.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">5. Demonstrate at horough understanding of the role of evidence in sociological thinking and how empirical evidence may be collected and analyzed to answer sociological questions, as demonstrated by:</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Defining and explaining the relevance of key qualitative and quantitative methodological concepts.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Describing the general role of empirical investigation in building sociological knowledge.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Comparing and contrasting the basic methodological approaches for gathering data.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">-- Designing are search project in an area of choice and explaining why various decisions(concerning sampling, data collection, analysis etc.) were made.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">The Sociology Department’s goal is that all students of sociology honours course would beable to achieve three levels of mastery by graduation -</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">Knowledge – Correct understanding via clear description/definition of key concepts.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">Application – Correct use of key concepts to explain social phenomena.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">Integration – Effective connection of key concepts/processes employed to explain social phenomena.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: medium;">This science also means understanding the natureof various social realities so that this society can draw up strategic plans,set goals and programs that will work to increase progress and raise society.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: "times new roman", times; font-size: x-large;"><strong><span lang="EN-IN"><br /></span></strong></span></p>
