ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

<span style="font-size: medium; font-family: "times new roman", times;">The Department of English was one of those Departments of the college which has been there since its very inception. In the initial years, it taught Undergraduate General Course (B.A. General) and since 2004 Honours Programme was initiated (B.A. English Honours). Right from the early years, the Department helped students achieve academic success through consistent University results and involvement in multidimensional educational pursuit. Khejuri had been an important vantage point for colonial interaction. Not only did it witness the establishment of pre-British (Portuguese) and British colonial centres, it also saw the foundation of the first Telegraph Office in South Asia. The Department is aware of the importance of Khejuri in Colonial and Asiatic transactions and steers its academic pursuits in engaging areas of probing into local history and colonial interactions, environment and literature as well as various exchanges of culture and language.

<span style="font-size: medium; font-family: "times new roman", times;">Several eminent educationists of Khejuri has been involved in teaching in the Department since its foundation. Late Brihaspati Mondal, Former Headmaster, Ajaya Annada Vidyamandir and an accomplished writer, had been the first Departmental Head. Late Sadhan Bhadra, former Headmaster, Khejuri Adarsha Vidyapith, had taught in the Department. Prof. BiswajitAcharya had been Departmental Head for several years and shaped the developmental phase of the Honours Department. Prof. Jahangir Hossein and Prof. SoumyaBharati also taught in the initial years. Under the stewardship of Prof. Shibes Panda (who became Departmental Head in 2015), the Department went through a new efflorescence, buoyed by the joining of young faculty members like Prof. Alakesh Panda, Prof. Homagni Shit and Prof. Puja Das. The Department has published Wall Magazine, “Rhapsody” since 2014 and has also held Departmental Freshers’ Programme. In recent years, the Department has formed its own Alumni and has held Departmental Alumni Meet.
